Car Seat Safety

**NEVER use a car seat which has been involved in an accident.
Maryland state law requires that all children under age 6 regardless of weight, or who weigh less than 40 pounds regardless of age, must ride in a federally approved car seat or booster seat. The law further states that the car seat must fit the child by age, height and weight, and the child must be secured in the seat and vehicle according to the instructions of the vehicle and car seat manufacturers. All children under 16 in Maryland must wear a seatbelt. Children under 16 may not ride in unenclosed pickup truck beds.

Aside from the more obvious tips and rules about flying with small children, here are a few which are not as widely known:

Request an infant life vest if one is not offered prior to take-off.

NEVER buckle the seat belt over you and your lap-held child. When the pilot hits the brakes (even softly) your weight could crush your child.

Bring a birth certificate or passport for your lap-held toddler for proof of age (under 2). You may not need it, but airlines are becoming more strict about this policy.
